Primetime coverage of global warming at Fox News and in the Wall Street Journal’s oped pages is overwhelmingly misleading, according to a new analysis, reports Stephanie Pappas at Live Science. The study, by the science-policy nonprofit Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS,) finds that 93 percent of Fox primetime program discussions and 83% of Wall Street Journal Editorials on global warming are inaccurate. “It’s like they were writing and talking about some sort of bizarre world where climate change isn’t happening,” study author Aaron Huertas said. “It’s clear that we’re not having a fact-based dialogue about climate change,” he added. Combing through 2012 archives of both media outlets, the researchers found that Fox News and the Journal were consistently dismissive of the established scientific consensus that climate change is happening and that human activities are the main driver. UCS called on their parent company, Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation, to examine their climate-change reporting standards and to help their staff differentiate between opinions on global warming and scientific fact. The outlets failings are perplexing, given that Rupert Murdoch himself has admitted that global warming is a serious global environmental threat.
