2012 Hottest US Year – So Far

Global warming is directly linked to a few weather events and climate trends, including warming itself, which makes 2012 a watershed US climate change year, reports Climate Central. More than superstorms, wildfires, and devastating drought, this year’s record-smashing spring and summer heat waves, with their melted airport runways and warped steel rail lines, are more evidence that climate change is real. NOAA announced recently that 2012 was “likely” to be the warmest year on record in the 48 states, and the warm December makes this certain. So far this December the mean temperature in the contiguous US has been over 44°F. In line with the global warming trend spurred by steadily rising carbon emissions, seven of the top 10 warmest years in the 48 states have occurred in the past 15 years. Like so much recent record-breaking weather, 2012 isn’t just going to break the previous record, it will smash it, by more than 1°F.  And hotter years are inevitable, as the planet, already warmer by 1.5 degrees, faces a likely rise of 8 degrees by 2100. Imagine what that will be like!

Book it: 2012, the hottest US year on record. Like so much recent record-breaking weather, 2012 isn’t just going to break the previous record, 2012 is looking to smash it, no matter what happens in the next 17 days. Climate Central
