One of the biggest challenges of climate science is measuring temperatures. Regular measurements of temperature globally didn’t really begin until the late 19th century, notes Alex Knapp at Forbes. So when scientists want to understand what temperatures were like prior to then, they have to use proxies. For example, scientists can tell by the way ice crystallizes what the weather and temperature was like thousands of years ago in ice core samples from polar regions. In the modern era, measurements have been steady, but have taken place at different sites at different times with different technologies, which means some heavy math can come into play to normalize that data well enough to see clear trends. In a new study, researchers applied proxy techniques from 173 different sources to see if the results matched modern global temperature measurements. Well, they did, verifying that a global warming trend has been occurring since the start of the Industrial Revolution, about 130 ago. This confirmation neatly sidesteps many warming skeptics’ explanations, AND shows that climate scientists have accurately adjusted all the different measurements to derive global temperature trends.
Join the swelling numbers of voters TELLING Congress they’ll vote for Clean Energy candidates here: http://signon.org/sign/we-are-the-clean-99?source=c.em.cp&r_by=487176 . This is an ongoing campaign (the next Congressional election is in 2 years!) so please, spread the word. It’s our way of telling Congress that a strong clean energy voting bloc is out there. This is how YOU can make a difference.
NOAA study provides independent evidence of warming. Using 173 different proxy sources for temperature, National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration researchers have confirmed that global warming trends began in about the year 1800, just as the industrial revolution was getting underway, according to a study published in Geophysical Research Letters.
