World Cannot Afford to Wait for a New Climate Treaty – IEA Report

The world cannot afford to wait for a new global climate change agreement to start in 2020, because doing so will end hopes of limiting global warming to moderate levels, the International Energy Agency, one of the world’s foremost authorities on energy, has warned, reports Fiona Harvey at the UK Guardian. Carbon dioxide emissions from energy rose in 2012 to a record high, says the agency’s recent report, driven partly by a striking 6% rise in emissions from Japan, following its phase-out of nuclear power, and continued rising emissions from China. IEA’s Fatih Birol, an economist and one of the world’s most respected energy experts, said that greenhouse gas emissions were rising so fast that waiting for a treaty would set the world towards warming 10 degrees fahrenheit, which would be catastrophic. Birol urged governments to take immediate action on improving energy efficiency, replacing fossil fuels with low-carbon power, stopping the construction of inefficient power plants and phasing out fossil fuel subsidies, as low or no-cost ways of reducing emissions quickly. He noted these actions would not harm economic growth, and could be taken immediately.

Join the swelling numbers of voters TELLING Congress they’ll vote for Clean Energy candidates here: . This is an ongoing campaign (the next Congressional election is in 2 years!) so please, spread the word. It’s our way of telling Congress that a strong clean energy voting bloc is out there. This is how YOU can make a difference.

  1. Signed and retweeted regarding this important issue…

Good post. From what I have read it takes about 15 years to truly impact the environment with change, so we are already way behind on this issue. On the good news side, even without a “plan” solar energy continues to get more cost effective and a confederation of small and large efforts are driving the push. Wind energy is now in 39 states and is an elegant solution. What frustrates me is when people talk about jobs in fossil fuel, they are usually are out of state hired guns who come in. The wind energy industry has over 75,000 jobs now and could have over 500,000 in the US by 2025. The solar jobs are more local as well. California if measured as a country would be the 7th largest solar producing country in the world and my state, NC is fourth in the country and it is still a relative secret. Keep pushing, BTG
