Another brutal record-breaking heat wave has hit the US west, due to the new wobbly path of the jet stream, reports Andrew Freedman at Climate Central, adding to the already dire drought conditions and further worsening wildfires. The furnace-like heat came because of a “stuck” weather pattern that set up across the U.S. and Canada. The jet stream — a fast-moving river of air at airliner altitudes that is responsible for steering weather systems, and normally flows fairly straight from west to east —developed massive undulations, like a giant slithering snake, setting up what meteorologists refer to as a deep “ridge” across the Western states, and an equally deep trough seting up across the Central and Eastern states. While each heat wave has ties to short-term weather variability, increasingly common and intense heat waves are one of the most well-understood consequences of manmade global warming, since as global average surface temperatures increase, the probability of extreme heat events increases by a greater amount. Data already suggests that heat waves are becoming more common worldwide.
Join the swelling numbers of voters TELLING Congress they’ll vote for Clean Energy candidates here: http://signon.org/sign/we-are-the-clean-99?source=c.em.cp&r_by=487176 .
