Carbon Catastrophe – Feds To Sell 316 Million Tons Of Coal

The Obama Administration plans to sell 316 million tons of coal in what could well be described as a carbon catastrophe, reports Jessica Goad at Climate Progress. Over 40% of US coal comes from US public lands, but as domestic use has declined with the increase of cheaper natural gas, the industry has been increasing overseas export. This is a basic disconnect with the administration’s goal of cutting carbon emissions outlined in Obama’s climate plan. When sold and burned elsewhere, the coal will release 500+ billion tons of greenhouse gas CO2, equaling almost half the annual emissions of US vehicles. Thus, the US is a merchant of climate change, increasing coal consumption – AND carbon emissions and pollution – by proxy. A critic argues this effect is enough to undo all of Obama’s other climate work. Finally, a Department of Interior report shows that taxpayers have already lost over 60 million dollar from underselling coal. Thus,we taxpayers have been actually paying to have it burn elsewhere and add to climate change.

Join the swelling numbers of voters TELLING Congress they’ll vote for Clean Energy candidates here: http://signon.org/sign/we-are-the-clean-99?source=c.em.cp&r_by=487176 . This is an ongoing campaign (the next Congressional election is in less than 2 years!) so please, spread the word. It’s our way of telling Congress that a strong clean energy voting bloc is out there. This is how YOU can make a difference.
